Batak Karo Traditional House

Traditional house is one of the nation's cultural assets. Each region has traditional houses with distinctive features and the uniqueness of each. However, unfortunately the day more people are leaving the area of traditional houses and move in a regular house. Only some regions, people, or tribe which still survive in the traditional house.

One of the interesting traditional house is the "Batak Karo traditional house". This Traditional house is also known as "traditional house Siwaluh Jabu". Siwaluh Jabu has a sense of a house inhabited by eight families. Each family has its own role in the house.

Batak Karo traditional house is different from other tribal house and the uniqueness that characterize the "Batak Karo traditional houses". It's very grand and fitted with horns. The establishment process to the life within traditional house are set by the tradition of Karo, and therefore called the traditional house.

In addition, the uniqueness of this house is not a barrier that limits any room. However, the division is using very strong traditional lines, though not visible. Each room has a name and anyone who should occupy the room.

Placement of families within "Batak Karo traditional house" is determined by the custom of Karo. Broadly speaking, this traditional house consists of "Jabu jahe (downstream)" and "Julu jahe (upstream)". Jabu jahe is also divided into two parts, namely "Jabu ujung kayu" and "jabu house sendipar ujung kayu".

However, there are times when "Batak Karo traditional house" consists of eight rooms and is inhabited by eight families. While in this house there were four kitchen. Each "Jabu" divided in two, forming a "Jabu-Jabu" such as sedapuren bena kayu, sedapuren ujung kayu, sedapuren lepar bena kayu, dan jabu sedapuren lepar ujung kayu.
